Mali Morris has been exploring transparent layering and removal, which allows colour to show through, or glow through colour, to be revealed, rather than overlaid. Although each painting is a separate and autonomous work, when grouped together, clustered or scattered, they invite complex readings which are amplified or dramatised by various placings positioning.
One of the painting methods she has used in the last few years is combing or scraping into wet paint over a layer of dry colour, finding that this apparently simple device offers a very complex synthesis of drawing, image, pace, rhythm, luminosity and colour contrast.

Naoko Takematsu Exhibition
18th(Tue)-29th(Sat).July.2000
11:00 - 19:00 (last day 17:00)  Closed on Sunday
Opening party: 18(Tue) 18:00 - 20:00
Objects ( mixed media )

Naoko Takematsu's work has been focusing on 'Self' within various environments.
In this exhibition, she particulary chose to look at her life in Tokyo. "There are so many roles you have got to play in this incredibly busy society" - she represents this by displaying a number of shell-like costumes made from a range of materials such as different kinds of metal, concrete, resins and vinyl.
These beautifully crafted and intriguing figures emanate aspects of artificiality in Tokyo raising the question "who really am I here ?" and "can you really see ME ?" The braille she uses and its messages also imply a lack of real communication and understanding.

Takematsu gained her Masters from Edinburgh College of Art and has been one of the leading members of Open Studio NOPE since last year, also working as an art event organiser and tutor for children's and adults' workshops. Her interest in working for people with special needs is taking her back to Britain with a scholarship after this exhibition. Some of her sculptures are currently installed at the British Embassy.
