Over the 35 years that she has been coming to Japan, appreciation of HERZOG’s work has increased considerably. In this her third trip she will not only hold a show at Gallery Saoh/Tomos, but will have exhibitions at three venues outside of Tokyo.
2 (Sat) – 9 (Sat) September Gallery Isshiki, Karuizawa
1 (Fri) – 12 (Tue) September Gallery Innocent, Kofu

Having completed her art education in the late 1950s, HERZOG embarked on a journey that has seen her not only visit Japan’s shores twice, but also travel to dozens of countries around the globe. HERZOG has taken as her task the seeking out and documentation of the spirit of the lands she visits. In her paintings that spirit is visible in amorphous forms that seem to rise out of her landscapes in silhouette.
HERZOG’s journey is of course continuing to this day, and the changes discernible in her depictions of ‘land spirits’ provide clues not only to the personal changes occurring within the artist, but to those gradual – often unperceivable – changes that take place in the land itself.
